Gloria has not been online for three days now. She is already feeling sick, like really sick. She has to pretend that she is just fine, so nobody come and ask if she has fever, an automatic positive test for corona.
No! I am fine and well, she finds herself saying loud. Yet, her body squeezed on her bed, shivering with cold. But what is wrong with me? Could she really have a fever? Could it be corona? “God forbid! Corona get out of my mind now!” she almost blunted out!
Gloria’s phone got missing about four days ago. No, got stolen actually. Nothing ever gets missing in this country, they are stolen. That’s why you never find them back. Ask our Oga at the top, they will clarify the matter.
She almost ran mad that day. You see, ever since this freezing lockdown, her phone has been her only source of joy. Even before the lockdown sha, 😉 From Facebook to Instagram, WhatsApp and Tiktok! Now, how would she live her life? She doesn’t even think there is a life outside her phone. 😌😔
But wait a minute? She pondered, trying to reflect on something that seems quite important.
Is she really sick because she lost her phone? I can’t believe it, what the heck has she even been doing with the phone apart from social media. Is she now an addict? Addicted to social media.
These thoughts were worrisome. They said the smart phone is very powerful and that you can do a lot with it! Has she really done anything productive with her phone?
Why should I be addicted to my phone, no, she is not really bordered about the phone, but that she can no longer access social media. Oh the gist, the gossip, the fake news, I’m gonna die! 😭 her body was beginning to heat up. Drops of sweats drip down her forehead. “I need my phone back…” Gloria is almost in tears.
And when you get your phone back, what next? An inner voice asked? Go back to my normal life! She grumbles.
Her mum walks into the room, carrying an Infinix Hot 6 Pro, new and sealed. She knew the cause of her daughter’s illness from the very start. First, Gloria withdrew fifteen thousand naira out of the sixteen thousand in her account, begging her mum to please add to it and get her a phone. She knew it was serious, she collected the money but didn’t make any promise.
24 hours later, her daughter has fallen sick. And in a few hours more, the sickness has skyrocket. She knew if she didn’t do anything ASAP, she may lose a child soon. So she ordered for the phone that morning.
“You have a new phone.” Gloria raised her head slightly. Noticing her mum’s presence for the first time. “Thanks mum.” She said and rested her body back on the bed.
Her mum is surprised, she looks through the room with some weirdness. Something isn’t right, she thought. Her natural daughter will jump up with a scream.
She drops the phone by the little table beside the bed. Forcing herself to assume that the scenario was ok. There is a few second silence. “What is wrong with you Gloria?” She finally asked with a weak and helpless voice.
Nothing mum, I am fasting! Her daughter said, forcing some firmness in her words. Gloria’s mum is confused, remembering her daughter ate a full dose of bread and tea that morning. Even though they had to force her. Hmmm.. “Ok o.. I wonder what kind of fast is that?” She said as she left the room.
Gloria turns to the other side of her bed, facing the wall. She said calmly in her mind as she tries to find some sleep to clear her head, “it’s a social media fast”.
Do you think such fast is necessary, if yes, how long should it take?
