My little fingers shook as I stood in front of the crowd, I could literarily feel the people’s piercing eyes on me. My feet was hot and almost could no longer hold my body, perspiration dripped down my neck, my heart beat! I feared, not because I could fail, but because I was about to be mocked, maybe not for failing, but for daring to try. It was my first active moment in public.
I was around primary one or two. We were members of Assemblies of God Church back then. I have always been perceived as a very quiet girl, and I think I still am, only when you come close you realize I can talk.
I remember that very day, we were in children’s church, it was a big branch of Assemblies of God Church and there were lots of big men’s children – real ajebotas… In fact, at that time, they speak so well that you would barely understand their queens English. Some of them were so cute and intelligent that I use to wonder maybe they were another kind of human beings.
Back then we normally have different activities in the children’s church, that very Sunday was ‘draw your sword competition’. Our children’s teacher, can’t remember his name, I’m not even sure I can recognize him if I see him today. But for the purpose of this story, I will call him Mr J. He asked who would want to participate, and as usual the beautiful handsome intelligent ajebotas raised their hands – prior to that time, I have never participated in any activity. I just watch, observe and enjoy my life. But I don’t know what came over me that day, In fact, if not that Mr J saw me almost immediately, I know I would have drop my hands right back down!
Little Mercy raised her hands, even the other kids were surprised as I was at myself and I could hear some of them saying; “Uncle she cannot do it”, of course, I didn’t even think I could do it. As at that time, I could barely even spell my father’s name. But it was as if Mr J also ate another kind of food that morning too, to him, you have raised your hand, you have raised your hand, so you must do it.
Na so they borrow one bible put for my hand. Haa! “My father my father, what have I done to myself?” What kind of public eba-and-rice-ment is this? But Mr J said something, he said; “Mercy, you can do it” really? That was it for me. And you know, Mr J was one of those fine bobo that small small children use to like including my humble pretty self. “We die here!” I held the bible firmly and matched forward. The other scholars were standing beside me, but this time I was no longer looking Uche face.
“Draw your sword” – I did, “open to Matthew chapter 1:1”, I opened and started reading something, don’t know what I was reading, Mr J came and looked at my Bible, it was Matthew chapter 1:1 I was the first person, two points for me. “Wawu! Na me be this?” I couldn’t believe it. “Oya, draw your sword” – I did, “open to John 3:16”, I started opening, but was already reading it before I got there, Mr J declared me winner. The other scholars were too shocked to even say anything. Some of the kids were now asking, “what’s her name?” Can you imagine? I have been with them for so long and they knew not my name. No wahala.. Story short, I came out second in that competition. Instantly, I became a super star. after that day, I never never was at the back seat anymore. That experience helped me gain confidence and made me desire to learn how to read and write fluently.
For me that was the beginning of my celebrity life, hehehe.. I had a sense I now belong to the public, it made me just put my best in everything I do, believing also that I can do anything. I am grateful for Mr J, God bless him wherever he is, I know his kids are blessed, favoured and honoured.
Whatever the odds may be, who says you can’t put yourself out there, who says you can’t live your best life? your first step to overcoming is taking that bold step. You need to take that first bold step. It is so vital to your success. Do not despise the days of little beginning… Just Start-Up!
To your humble lowly beginning and journey to greatness…
