Microsoft partners with Nigeria government to speedup digital transformation in the Nigeria
It seems like while the world is mourning over the publicly announced divorce of Bill and Melinda Gates, the Gate multi-billion dollar tech giant Microsoft is making wave and breaking new grounds into the virgin continent of Africa.
Microsoft a few hours ago signed a collaboration with the Nigeria government to speeds up digital transformation in Nigeria.
In a public announcement made by the Nigeria Vice-president, Prof Yemi Osibanjo, the discussion to leverage innovation, technology and governance in Nigeria was held January this year 2021 with the Microsoft president Brad Smith, which in a short time is becoming a reality.
Three key pillars were identified by the Microsoft cooperation to help build a solid foundation in fostering a digital economy in Nigeria. These are connectivity, skilling and digital transformation.
The Microsoft President, Brad Smith, stressing their belief in the future of Nigeria, says they are excited as a company to add to their investment, thereby creating jobs by putting technology to work.
The goal and commitment as highlighted by Smith is to upskill five million people in Nigeria over the next three years.
According to research, internet penetration in Nigeria is about 50%. However, since the covid-19 pandemic, there has been an increased pace in digitisation with many companies and brands working remotely.
This, however, does not rule out the fact that much needs to be done to empower all Nigeria citizens to leverage the opportunities of the present digital and global economy.
All six geopolitical region in Nigeria have been earmarked for this high-speed internet infrastructure and development, following discussions with the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy and local partners.
Meanwhile, Microsoft’s through its Airband Initiative has succeeded in bringing high-speed internet connectivity to underserved communities around the world.
