Mama, where are you going this morning?
I want to get vegetables from the market. How are you my dear, and how are your parents?
We are all good. But why don’t you send someone?
There is nobody in the house my dear, you know all my children are married and in their own home.
Of course, I can’t send my husband. Mama gave her usual coyly smile.
The father of the little girl staying with us came to take her three days ago. He says we are old people.
Mama gave her little smile again, but this time, mix with pain and some shame.
Eya, don’t worry mama, you will be fine. I would have helped you get the vegetables, but my mum warned me never to go close to any old person again.
Don’t worry my… Mama gave a little cough. But as she lifts her head to continue her statement, the young lady was sixty yards away.
Hmmm.. Mama gave a deep sigh and walks on.
As mama stands by the road, just before she crossed to the other side where there are vegetables, a public bus stops abruptly almost in front of her.
With every passenger struggling and hurrying to fly out of the bus.
Mama gave her distance, but this is not a bus stop, why are they all rushing to get out? She wondered.
In a moment, all passengers had disappeared. Then a young man looking somewhat tattered, came down, smiling as he stares at mama.
Opening his eyes wide with questioning shoulders, asking mama; “what? I only told them I had tuberculosis and needed to cough. I had only gave one cough, just one tiny cough.”
Mama shakes her head as she finds her way to her destination. The young man’s home was a few yards away.
Mama please hold on, just point at the vegetable you want and I will pass it across.
Ok, that one there.
The seller packs it and gives her. But mama, you know you are putting people at risk by going out.
I am sorry, my life is even more at risk but I have to cook for my husband and I. I will minimize my going out hence forth.
People start running helter-skelter in the market. The seller is confused: whether to abandon her vegetables or pack them.
Mama tries to move to a safer place, guess she was not fast enough, as another woman rushes pass her, shouting “Pandemic! Pandemic!” She pushes mama with all the strength perhaps her 48 years on the planet has gathered.
Mama legs couldn’t hold her ground, she submits to a great fall. A great fall that made her lose touch with the feel of her muscles.
I need help, I need help…! Mama continues to plead as she struggles to get back on her feet.
Who will help mama, and the rest of us?
