Growing up was a bit different for me. I was not the regular child. Alright, it’s easy to understand and predict kids you know, I have taught in three different nursery/primary schools, Before and after university, so I know.
But it wasn’t very easy to predict this February born girl as a child. today I could be very active and lead games, then tomorrow, I would simply just sit at our corridor and watch other kids play wondering whether or not I should join them.
I was a shy girl too, I would have said I still am, but nah, I am not. I have choose “Shamelessness” Shyness is not a fruit of the Spirit. So, let’s just say I’m a gentle girl now. lolzz.
I was very active in primary school, I was always the leader of every debate section and my group always win. Cramming was my middle name. I really love dancing then, my uncle at a time had to nick named me Awilo-locoba. I remember winning one dancing competition, and they gave me five naira or so. I was a Big woman the entire week. I was always in front of every Kingdom dance. “I will worship the Lord for he is mighty” was the song most popular for us. I was second for cultural dance, another Bini girl took the lead. She was my good friend.

I was a story teller too. At six or seven years old, I would gather my siblings and my neighbors kids fabricating different stories for them. Some would make them laugh so hard that they would roll on the floor. Others would be so scary that some kids would run to the back of the door and hide. I was that good.
I was also good with my fingers, I was that child who would draw almost every image in my test book. I made a few friends from drawing, “winks” They would come to me for an image they want me to help them draw, and I would gladly draw the lines. I remember my father noticing and buying me, colour paints, drawing book, and Maths set, I was in primary four. I however stopped drawing when I entered secondary school. so when I see the likes of Macaulay Barnabas, I feel perhaps I could have been that good if I didn’t drop my pencil.
I started writing in secondary school, short stories and novels, but I never finished any of my write ups, 😉 so nobody really got to read them. I still have a few of the manuscript.
I had a lot of weaknesses too but I have learnt not to focus on them, you could read my blog post on that.
So, talk of what you want to be when you grow up, nothing really appealed to me, not a nurse, even though my daddy really wanted that. not a doctor, not a lawyer, nor accountant. I always knew I would not do any of that.
I admired just one profession. But I never told anybody because I knew they would not like it. I loved the likes of Omotola and Genevieve. But I wasn’t sure I would be able to do all the plenty kissing that they did, so I never told anyone about it. All through secondary school, my love for acting wouldn’t let me see any other profession. So when I came in contact with Literature in my senior secondary school, I could relate with it and easily connected. Yes, I used to read novels before then, but I got a better understanding of Literature when a copper Teacher was posted to our school. That was what influenced my decision to study English and Literature.
I guess the reason I loved acting was because it gives the opportunity of expressing yourself in different dimensions. I could express myself in different ways, to inspire and to impact. That was great for me. That was what I needed. Today I have written two powerful script, I’m not sure Nollywood can act them, lol. So if you are connected to the likes of Tyler Perry and Ryan Coogler tell them I have something they need. Just a few million dollars and it is theirs. Tongues out.
Of course, I’m not an Actor, but you see, WRITING is a beautiful way of expressing yourself freely. You can assume any character and write about it. Like Margaret Atwood would say, it’s between you and the papers or your keypad, And the waste bin is your friend. Just write.
So today I’m not surprised that I enjoy doing what I’m doing. I admire me!
