When I tell people I’m a Content Creator, I get this surprising and sometimes confusing look, some are sincere enough to ask, “what does that mean”, many times, by the time I finish explaining to them I end up getting just another client who wants me to help them create content. Some persons think content creation is all about writing.
Even though it’s an added advantage, content creation is not about knowing how to write! There are so many misconception about the business of Content Creation, yet, it’s about the most needed skill in the digital space. And many brands and businesses pay six to seven figures on a regular basis for great content. Content Creation has nothing to do with digital marketing either, as I see some persons trying to combine both jobs. However, a digital marketer will have nothing to work with without content.
What exactly is Content?
Content is whatever beautifies and promotes you, your brand or your business in the digital space. A good content brings you customers and ultimately helps you generate revenue. Your content can be informative, entertaining, enlightening or educating. What that means is that, if you run a business, your content do not always have to centre around your product, or inviting customers to buy, buy and buy. That will just be like writing sales copy every time, which is just a very tiny part of Content creation. There should be days when what you do is inform and entertain your audience or customers.
Take for instance if you are a Baker, you could actually talk about proper food diet, or the health benefit of drinking enough water. This is not about baking per say, but it gives your audience/customers value, and that makes you valuable.
I create content for an Architectural firm and many times, we don’t even get to talk about buildings and structures and the rest. That could bore anyone out if we had to do that every time.
One of my client, a health insurance company, on our weekly content schedule, we only have just about three days when we get to invite subscribers to insure their health. There are so many things you can talk about that will indirectly but firmly help to promote your brand or business and get you the customers that you want. And even more importantly, help you maintain your customers.
Have in mind that one reason why you should create content whether as a business, a brand or even as an individual who wants to build an influential public profile, the underlying reason for all is to build TRUST. This has it’s own process anyway, that means, you have to first go public, be online, get your space in the digital world, be visible, create awareness. Then people get to know you, like you and then trust you. Like I said, that’s another process on it’s own.
A content creator is someone who is responsible for the contribution of information to any media and most especially to digital media. They usually target a specific end-user/audience in specific contexts. A content creator helps build a brand, promotes an idea, or generates business sales via content creation in the digital space.
Before I go on, let me quickly say It’s easy to be online these days… You just have to be online, no matter how small you think your business is. If you own a business, you could have a website that helps you promote it, and pages on the different social media platforms. But if you do not have yet, the time and expenses of maintaining a blog, you could go on Google, type, “google my business” follow the process and register your business on google, by this people around you who need your services and search on google will easily find and reach you.
But if you ever need a web developer, my team can make you a great website at very affordable price.
Now back to content creation. After building your website and creating pages on social media platforms, what’s next? You’re certainly not going to leave them blank nor show up only once in a while. You will need to fill them up every single time, and content is the only food they eat.
Content are made in different Content Format, they could be;
-
Blog posts, like the one you are reading right now.
-
Newsletters, like the different mails you get on a regular basis.
-
Salescopy, people usually think content creation is all about salescopy, but it’s not, like I mentioned earlier, it’s just a tiny aspect of content creation. Every other content you put out can generate sales for you and even more importantly, help you build an audience and retain your customers.
-
Infographics, design, these are micro content like the one above. You can generate a lot of Infographics from your blog post and news letters and people usually love it because it’s short, catchy and straight to the point.
-
Podcast, audio content
-
Social media copy (one of my favourites!) This follows the rules of a blog post, and sales copy only that it could be shorter.
-
Video marketing/editing. The need for video content is increasing by the day and there are a lot of video editing Apps, that could help you create video content without necessarily being a video editor.
-
eBooks
-
Webinars and live shows
-
Images
-
…and more!
All these various format help you generate content that suites you and/or your brand, and one content can be in up to two, three or four formats depending on your target audience. There are more to content creation than this post can carry. This was an insightful read for me. I’ve been thinking for years🙈 now about video content on my social media platforms but can’t seem to get myself round it, I feel I’m better with writing and though I’ve alot of write ups, I still don’t post them especially on my blog.
Hello Lucian, there are a lot of tools out there for video content creation, although they are paid if you want to get the most out of them, but software like Adobe is absolutely free. Meanwhile, I’d recommend you start sharing your write-ups to your blog except they aren’t meant for your audience. thanks for the comment
